MOTHERHOOD | 10 THINGS I’VE LEARNT SINCE BEING A MOM

A friend asked me the other day what I’ve learnt since becoming a mom and it got me thinking… What have I learnt the past ten months since baby arrived? So many thoughts rushed through my mind in that split second. Replaying like a carousel: […]

Baby Skincare Must Have for Dry Skin
Going shopping for items for your newborn baby can be overwhelming. There are a lot if things to buy: nursery essentials, baby clothes and sleepwear, baby bath and skincare, things for the Go Bag, the Diaper Bag, baby feeding… The list goes on. As a first time mom (parent), it is so important to get only the best for Baby. Researching what to buy is laborish. There are so many products!  I would like to buy everything if space wasn’t an issue (we live in an apartment); or if money wasn’t an issue (I hate buying things that goes to waste).

Now that Emily is 6 months old (omg just like a blink of an eye!), I like to share with you our handy checklist of items we purchased, things we recommend, things we wished we never bought – our tried and tested (broken down my categories) – to make sure you don’t have to!

To be honest when we first registered at our baby registry at our local baby store, we were given a list that’s even longer than this one below.

While most items were very Pinterest worthy – however merely decorative or not very useful. Because honestly baby could care less whether the walls are pink or white. All baby cares about are boobies (or formula milk), if she sleeps comfortably and has a fresh change of diapers.

Baby Skincare Must Have for Dry Skin:

Newborn babies tend to have dry skin, rashes, pimples and eczema. When Emily was born initially her skin was fine, however; after a weeks she started having very dry skin. None of the over the counter creams seemed to work. We wondered if we should talk with the doctor about my child’s dry skin.

We were frustrated. Baby was frustrated, uncomfortable and very fussy (who can blame her with dry itchy and cracked skin). Doctor suggested we wait it out before using prescription medications.

Her skin started to improve almost immediately after we started using the following products.

La Roche Posay: This LIPIKAR Baume AP+ cream is anti-Itching, lipid-replenishing, soothing balm. It is non-greasy and absorbs very quickly. I love that it is fragrance-free and paraben-free. It relieves very dry, irritated skin prone to itching, extreme dryness, sensitive and atopy-prone skin. Suitable for babies, children and adults.

Also on the list is La Roche Posay’s LIPIKAR SYNDET AP+ shower cream. Dryness starts in the shower and this shower cream reduces severe dryness.

Aveeno Baby: This is a heavy nighttime balm designed for soothing dry itchy skin. This colloidal oatmeal nighttime balm helps care for your baby’s skin with eczema. This unique balm intensely moisturizes however I find it to be very greasy. It also strengthens the skin’s natural moisture barrier and helps soothe and prevent recurrence of dry, itchy skin, so your baby will feel relief when applied at bedtime.

Polysporin: When baby’s skin is cracked and I’m afraid that she will get an infection I will use a little Polysporin Complete. Our pediatrician says it is ok for babies, however; if you are concerned please consult with your medical professional first!

Playpen: Once baby starts to crawl and wiggle it is very very very important to keep them secured in a safe place if you want to walk away (even for a split second!). That’s why we got this compact playpen that is lightweight and very easy to carry, set up and fold up to store away! It even comes in this pretty dusty millennial pink! Make sure to get this organic white fitted sheet for the foam mattress!High Chair: I love this IKEA high chair. Emily loves this much more compared to the other high end high chairs that we’ve tried!

Playmat gym: Everyone baby needs a playmat gym to help stimulate their brain. We love this Skip Hop activity gym with musical sheep, light-up star, cloud squeaker, bird rattle and baby-safe sunshine mirror.

Toys: Every parent and baby will have their preference of toys, we especially love this Bee Crawl Toy from Skip Hop. Encourage baby to crawl with this fun two-in-one developmental toy. It is designed to encourage crawling with with lights, energetic music and movement. This motorized explore & More Follow-Bee Crawl Toy grows with baby through three stages: stage 1 pre-crawling as an easy-to-hold wobbling bee rattle, stage 2 beginner crawling as a cloud moving in a circular pattern, and stage 3 advanced crawlers with a cloud moves in random pattern to encourage chasing.

Bouncy Gym: When baby is ready to bounce of their legs and you want a little free time this baby bouncer has all the bells and whistles! I love that this modern activity center captivates baby from head-to- toe—from four months to toddler! Designed in collaboration with a pediatrician, our baby activity center supports a “whole body” approach to play and learning. Easy to assemble, with toys that can be positioned anywhere for baby, it features a 360-degree rotating seat that turns and stretches for bouncing. The unique Discovery Window lets baby see their feet while they play to learn cause and effect. 38 Weeks Pregnant Update

38 Weeks Pregnant Update

38 Weeks Pregnant Bumpdate HelloNance.com Baby Beauty Travel Lifestyle Vancouver Blog

38 Weeks Pregnant Update: I’m feeling all sorts of emotions this week. My baby is full term and technically can arrive any moment now. I’m going to be a Mom soon. And Dave will be a Dad soon. Wow! It is so important for us to capture this moment that a baby lives inside me. Savour this moment of being a couple and before we become parents.

Vacation / Pre-Maternity Leave

I am so happy that I took 2 weeks vacation before my due date. In hindsight I should have taken 3 weeks. Nonetheless, I am on Maternity Leave! My baby dropped even lower to my pelvic floor making 1. harder to walk (yes, I have that penguin-pregnancy-wobble now); 2. harder for long distance travel (go forbid I have to find a washroom mid-way on my drive to walk); and 3. just plain tiring (all I want to do is nap).

I love this time to rest. Everyone keeps telling me, get as much sleep possible now. I won’t be sleeping for the next 2 years! But I also find it a little boring to be home most of the time when hubby is at work. I don’t feel comfortable to drive myself anymore. What if my contractions start when I’m on the road? What if my water breaks? OMG!

Get Out and Do Things

Although at 38 weeks I’m pretty tired most of the time from carrying this baby but I’m so happy to be able to go out and do things. I got to go out with hubby on a few dates. We ate some of my favorite restaurants (here, here and here). The weather has been also very sunny, so it was nice to go to the park to walk around and get some fresh air!

Coffee and Heart Rate

Throughout my whole pregnancy, I hated coffee. This is a surprise even to myself. I’m one of those people who has to have a cup of joe to get my day started. Don’t talk to me if I haven’t finished my first cup! To my surprise, the the taste of coffee was bitterly unbearable (even if the aroma was inviting). Then comes week 38 of pregnancy. Suddenly iced coffee was invigorating and ever so delicious!

A word of caution to expecting moms to be. Do not drink this before your OB GYN visit. My heart rate shot up to 140/100 and my doctor was so worried, she sent me to the hospital for blood work. Thankfully I was discharged within 3 hours with no complications. But it was quite the scare for my hubby and myself.

Swollen Feet

I have also been pretty lucky throughout my pregnancy that I had no swollen feet, ankles or hands. I mean my wedding rings didn’t fit around week 20. It was getting tight and I optioned to stop wearing them. But NEVER had my feet or toes swelled up like sausages. However, comes 38 weeks pregnancy, Edema kicks in. The swelling usually gets worse as the day progresses. And I have to elevate my legs at night or get a feet massage.

Nursery

We are just putting in the finishing touches to the nursery. I even got a guest bed for Dave if he needs to get some quality sleep for work or when the grandparents visits. I’ll have to share those pictures with you soon!

Wedding Ring No Longer Fits

Wedding Ring No Longer Fits

My wedding rings do not fit anymore! It happened fairly early during my pregnancy around month four and five. Although, my overall body weight hasn’t significantly increased. I didn’t ballooned the heck up. Nor did my feet swell (and still hasn’t at 32 weeks pregnant). […]
